DarkOrbit

DarkOrbit as logged here

DarkOrbit predates most of the browser games still running and the longevity shows in its structure: layered systems, a map that keeps opening outward, and an upgrade path with no obvious end.

You choose a company, mine and fight to fund a better ship, and eventually find yourself in contested space where other players want the same resources. Combat is positional and deliberate rather than reflex-driven, which is exactly right for a browser.

It is the longest grind listed here and has the largest tail. The people who like it do not measure their time in weeks.

Where it pulls ahead of the rest

  • Space combat
  • Ship upgrades
  • Company wars

Logged as right for

Anyone who enjoys a long haul with a corporation around them and a clear next objective at all times.

Logged as wrong for a player who wants to feel powerful by the end of the month.

What the log says about week one

Join a clan immediately, even an inactive one. The map is far more legible when somebody explains it and far safer with company.

Commit credits to one ship line. Partial upgrades across three leave you outmatched everywhere.
