Grepolis

Grepolis as logged here

Grepolis takes classical Greece seriously enough to be charming and lightly enough to be readable. You build a city on an island, choose a god, earn favour and summon mythical units that genuinely change how a fight goes.

The island layout is the clever part. Your neighbours are fixed, the sea between you matters, and the early game is a series of small negotiations about who takes which spare city.

Alliances carry the late game, where fleets move between islands and a well-timed support convoy decides a siege. It is the friendliest route into this genre on the list.

Where it pulls ahead of the rest

  • City-state building
  • Mythological units
  • Naval warfare

Logged as right for

You are new to map strategy and want a version that explains itself without being shallow.

Logged as wrong if you have played Travian for years - this will feel familiar and slightly lighter.

What the log says about week one

Choose your god for the units, not the artwork. The difference between them shows up the first time somebody attacks you.

Claim the free island spots near you early. Expansion here is about geography and the good slots go in week one.
